This week in first grade, we continued learning rules and routines for various places throughout the building and playground. We established and practiced some guidelines for running laps as a movement break so that we can be leaders and teach them to the kindergartners next week. All students have finished both reading and math iReady assessments. We are busy pouring over the data to drive our instruction. I look forward to sharing it with you at conferences.
In literacy, we continued to read and learn many lessons from Stellaluna and Frog and Toad Together "Dragons and Giants." On Thursday, just before we were due in the computer lab for media block, guess what we saw hanging from the bricks just outside our door. Our very own Stellaluna. Only, she wasn't really a fruit bat because we learned that fruit bats live in "warm and sultry forests, far, far away."
On Friday, Nathan brought Broncos (yay football) M&Ms for us to estimate as part of his Celebrity Week (each child will have a week to shine). We had fun counting the first 185 into groups of 10 (a suggestion from a bright young mathematician to help us keep track of bigger numbers) before we had to be off to music. Because the container was naturally divided into halves, we estimated that the other half would also hold 185 so we didn't have to spend another 15 minutes counting it, whoo. We realized we could simply add 185+185 to get, you guessed it, 370 which was more than enough to share. Then we worked hard at the end of the day on a Friday in order to earn our very own share (a cup of 10 each). Who knew learning about place value and estimating could be so delicious? Thanks, Nathan!
