In ReadyGEN Unit 1, Module B, students are taking a close look at the informational text, Elephants and Their Calves. We have learned text features that help readers find and understand information:
Please be prepared to make practicing math facts a part of your daily math homework beginning this week! Finally, in science, we are beginning to learn about the properties of solids and liquids. Try this link for a fun YouTube video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=C33WdI64FiY |

We will begin ReadyGEN Unit 1 Module B tomorrow! It focuses on informational text. We will be comparing and contracting informational text features with story elements. In math, continue to practice those math facts...adding and subtracting 0-10. |

We will be wrapping up our three week study of the narratives (stories) Stellaluna and Frog and Toad Together "Dragons and Giants" next week. It has been great fun to Close Read these stories. We all feel very connected to the characters and events in both stories. We are even able to defend our opinion about which characters have a stronger friendship. Next week we will wrap up module A with a performance based writing assessment in which we will utilize the writing process to write and illustrate two sentences that tell how the characters show that they are friends. Please ask your first grader about the following:
Unit 1 Module A Vocabulary:
escaped, perched, limb, rescue, brave, sultry
Unit 1 Module A Phonics (for mastery):
/m/, /s/, /t/, /a/, /k/, /p/, /n/, /f/, /p/, /g/
blending these sounds together to make words like:
"mat, sat, Sam, Tam," etc.
Unit 1 Module A High Frequency Words:
"I", "see," "a," "the," "you," "look," "like," "we"
Conventions:
In math, we continue to practice and learn about "partners"/addends of a certain number. We completed our first page in our very own math workbooks...hooray! We also continued to focus our attention on the numeral 10 while singing the "Best Friends" song. Finally, we wrapped up our week by estimating Broncos M&Ms!

First graders began receiving homework today! Homework for this week is comprised of 3 pages of math which supports our classroom learnings. Students are to carefully practice writing numerals and to learn the "partners" (addends) adding up to 10. They are also asked to keep a weekly Reading Log which can be completed together. Please note the log includes a list of current vocabulary and high frequency words at the bottom of the log. We would like students to highlight these words right on the log if they should encounter them in their reading this week. Students are encouraged to spend at least 15 minutes reading per day (once during the weekend). The purpose of these homework activities is to support and reinforce reading and math skills that we are acquiring at school. Even if your child is not yet reading independently, reading to your child models good reading skills, inflection, and pacing. So, snuggle up with a good book together and make this a fun family activity.

If you are working on a Family Word Wall (blogs.svvsd.org/languagearts/category/family-community-literacy/), please include these vocabulary and/or high frequency words:

Math:
In math, students are reviewing number sense as well as addition and subtraction skills which were taught in kindergarten. We are focused on reviewing our addition and subtraction facts to 10. Students are learning strategies to enhance fluency. We are discussing the importance of the numbers 5 and especially 10. If students can master the combinations/partners of 5 (1+4, 4+1, 2+3, 3+2) and those of 10 (1+9, 9+1, 2+8, 8+2, 3+7, 7+3, 4+6, 6+4, 5+5), adding and subtracting larger numbers will be that much easier. Ask your firstie to share his/her partner houses for 5 and 10 that were sent home this week. Have him/her sing the "Best Friends" song. If you are looking for some added practice in math, try apps and websites that provide practice with facts to 10.
