This week in first grade was filled with lots of new learning, establishing routines and rules, and some assessment too.
In math we are exploring number relationships for addition and subtraction. This is a review of skills taught in kindergarten. Did your little mathematician explain the 5 Partner House? Can s/he name all of the "partners" of 5 (0+5, 5+0, 1+4, 4+1, 3+2, and 2+3)? We are also focused on the idea of 5 and 1 more=6, 5 and 2 more=7, and so on. We are also learning that 10 is a very important number.
In ReadyGen literacy Unit 1 Module A we are tackling the following goals as we read Stellaluna and "Dragons and Giants" from Frog and Toad Together:Readers will retell stories, including key details, and demonstrate understanding of the central message or lesson.
Writers will write a narrative story in which they recount one or more sequenced events, and in which setting plays a role.
Learners will recognize important relationships between characters.
In an effort to learn more about our learners, students took a beginning of the year writing assessment and began iReady reading and math diagnostic assessments in the computer lab this week. Attached, please find the link for more information about iReady.

Finally, we have been working hard to establish our classroom rules and routines. They are working hard to get their clips on "purple" and earn soaring slips. Students are learning to:
1. be active listeners
2. be respectful learners
3. be responsible
4. try their best!
