Hygiene Elementary has begun our school-wide Literacy Intervention Block. Each morning all students are engaged in direct and targeted literacy instruction. Each child will receive small group reading instruction from either Mrs. Miller or myself. In addition, many students will also receive skill specific instruction from Mrs. Krebs, Mrs. Newell, or Mrs. Emmerman. These groups were created based on beginning of the year iReady data. At this time the focus of these intervention groups is phonics. These intervention groups are flexible. Every three to four weeks students will be assessed to determine mastery of specific skills. Regrouping will occur continuously throughout the year.
iReady is a comprehensive reading diagnostic assessment that measures phonological awareness, phonics, high- frequency words, vocabulary, comprehension of literature, and comprehension of informational texts. This is the first time first graders have take this test. To measure growth all students will be taking the diagnostic test again in the winter and spring. Students may also be progress monitored throughout the year. I look forward to sharing the data with you at Parent Teacher Conferences.
We, at Hygiene, are so fortunate to have these systems in place to ensure each child's literacy success. Not only will students be receiving small group instruction, they may also be utilizing Lexia, a computer-based phonics program. For more information about Lexia, please see the address below.
