We sure had a different but fun week in first grade. With Labor Day on Monday, we all seemed a little out of routine come Tuesday. Thus, we reviewed and reminded ourselves of the procedures and routines of a successful learning environment. Please be on the look out soon for a Rule Book created by your first grader.
Late Start Wednesday presented another break in routine and an opportunity to dive right in to our school-wide study of OCEANS. We began with the empathy stage of the design thinking process to get our minds thinking about oceans. We watched part of Disney's Oceans, made a globe to represent the continents and oceans, and even made oceans in a bottle with Mrs. Miller's class.
We are wrapping up Unit 1 Module A of ReadyGEN with a writing assessment which asks students to retell two events that represent the friendship between Stellaluna and her baby bird friends from our favorite, Stellaluna. On Monday, we will begin looking at informational text in Module B.
In math, we continue to study number relationships and addition and subtraction fact fluency to 10. Specifically, students are learning strategies like counting on and doubles to add and subtract. Now would be a great time to try some math apps, computer links, or flash cards to practice those facts.
In social studies, we began looking at maps and globes as representations of our earth. We know that blue on a map represents water and that there sure is a lot of it on our earth. We even made our own globes.
We will begin science with a look at solids, liquids, and gases. We will take a closer look at the oceans in a bottle that were created on Late Start to think about the different properties of matter. We will ask, why doesn't the oil in our bottle absorb the blue food coloring and mix with the water? And, why do the sand and shells stay on the bottom of the bottle while the oil stays on the top?
