Week 5 was another fun week in first grade. We continued to practice math facts with games and flash cards. The kids love the double rap so much, I think you should give it a try at home: Doubles Doubles. Be on the look out for a change in math homework this week.
We continue to read our anchor text, Elephants and Their Calves. It is so exciting to see the light bulbs go on as the student realize they are actually recognizing the word in print and really reading themselves as we read the pages together. At this point, students are really understanding the differences between informational text and stories.
We even made time for a quick design challenge. Because we are beginning our study of the properties of matter and learning about adding nickels and pennies, we jumped right in to creating a prototype of something that will carry as many nickels and pennies as possible across water. I promised the kiddos I would share this with you as many of them got so excited they simply didn't have enough time to finish their prototypes. Perhaps this is something you would like to attempt at home. You can reuse tin foil, cardboard, plastic cups, etc.
